Lucky us that Samsung just unveiled Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, the most sought after smartphones of the past months, phones at an “Unpacked 2017” event in New York.
The next Samsung flagship phone is going to be found in UK and Europe stores sooner than expected, on 28th April 2017. It’s a different date from what we are used to, this is because the Note 7 issues, hence the testing took longer.
So far, it is known that there will be at least 10 million units made of the new phone. Therefore, five million S8 will be assembled in March and the rest in April just in time for the launch. Introducing for the first time, Dex, a new feature that makes your phone become a full-fledged desktop anytime you want.
The device will have two variants of processing power:
1.Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, estimated to be the top processing unit of 2017
2.Exynos 8895, that seems slightly more powerful than the Qualcomm counterpart.
Galaxy S8 features a UHD bent screen with a long, slim, all glass body. New pressure-sensitive panel is replacing the old physical home button. The finger print scanner went to the back on the phone close to the camera.
Since Galaxy S6, Samsung amazed with the introduction of bent screen and the Edge functionality variant. Samsung decided to be different and have the bent screen for both variants of the S8. Therefor won’t be any noticeable difference between the two phone choices outside screen size.
The screen sizes will be 5.8 inch diagonal for the Galaxy S8 and 6.2 inch for the Galaxy S8+. As always, Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with new aspect ratio of 18,5:9 with 2960×1440 pixel resolution. A great user experience regarding virtual reality videos and games.
Both devices pack 4 GB of RAM. I for one would have expected 6 or 8 GB of ram. Still there are rumors that the 6GB variant will be available for Chinese market.
Vital for any top end phone, Galaxy S8 main camera has 12 megapixels “Dual Pixel” and 4k video. The selfie camera, also received a huge upgrade, with 8 megapixels while the past flagships maintained 5 megapixels. If you look closely above the display its the iris scanning camera, feature first seen on the Note 7.
As always the biggest problem for smart phones of this caliber is their battery. Even though the new processor will use less power, hard to estimate how long battery will last. The display is bigger while the battery is 3.000 mAh which is, in my opinion, really small.
The galaxy S8 will be water resistant. Equipped with gorilla glass 5 should make it really durable for day to day activities. The problem I see with it being all glass is when we drop the device, a high enough distance and it will crack. Hope that won’t happen!
Both devices run Android 7.0 Nougat, with plenty of new productivity features, such as multitasking. Allowing two applications opened on the screen at the same time. Security wise, the phone has quite the arsenal, fingerprint scanner, iris scanner, facial recognition and of course password authentication if we still prefer it.
The launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be on April 28th 2017 in two color variants, midnight black and orchid grey.
The galaxy S8 costs £689 while the S8+ costs £779.
